Train timing: Rlys seeks opinion from passengers

In an effort to deal with complaints from passengers regarding the delay in train timing of ErnakulamShoranur passenger (No 56364), the railway officials took opinion polls from passengers.
According to passengers, the train which is expected to depart Ernakulam south station at 6.05pm usually gets delayed by one hour.
The survey prepared by railway officials put forth two options before the passengers: Either advance the timing to 5.30pm or postpone it to 6.15pm. The opinion poll was conducted by senior divisional commercial manager, Trivandrum division.
As per the survey conducted on April 24, of the 472 commuters of the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger 296 opted for 6.15pm as their desired departure time and 175 preferred 5.30pm. One passenger opted the existing time (6.05pm).
Passengers got delayed at least by 25 minutes every day . “It gets held usually in the outer area of the Ernakulam north station till the Trivandrum-Kannur Janshatabdi Express and the Kanyakumari-Bengaluru City Island Express pass the Ernakulam north station. Hence, people who have to board the passenger from Edappally have had to wait till 7pm for the train to arrive,“ said R D Manikandan, convener of Edappally passengers association.
He said the association had earlier reported the delay to railway officials, but no action was taken.
“We had lodged at least 50 complaints since last year. We had staged dharnas. “ Advancing the train's timing will affect many passengers. We feel the time should be fixed at 6.15pm. Officials should also make sure that the train does not get delayed,“ he added.
However, Ernakulam area manager Rajesh Chandran expressed qualms regarding the change of train timings on the basis of opinion polls. “We are not informed about this,“ he said.

Now, railway concierge will get you cabs, porters

Passengers can book cab and porter at his destination station before the train arrives at that station through railways online 'concierge services'. The facility, which can be availed as a combo of both cab and porter or only cab services, is at present available at 22 stations, including Tirupati, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Howrah and Mysore.

Travellers can also do online booking for wheel chair and stretcher services for elderly or sick people. The concierge services aimed at facilitating last-mile connectivity to passengers and tourists by arranging a taxi for dropping the passenger to his residence or hotel is one among the slew of initiatives taken by railways after BJP government took charge.

The transporter has also launched e-catering services in select trains to begin with. The plan is to integrate the best food chains in the country into e-catering services so that train passengers have the option to place online order for food at the time they are booking tickets.
Depending on the response from customers, the facility will be extended to cover more trains. In an interview to TOI, railways minister Suresh Prabhu said, "This year, substantial improvement in passenger amenities is planned. I have asked MPs to put money for improving facilities and also CSR money. We have already started e-catering. For quality food, more base kitchens would be set up."

He said that more base laundries would also be set up for clean linen and bedrolls, adding that a new separate department for cleaning has been set up. As part of its initiatives to make rail travel more enjoyable, railways has roped in National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for designing of bed rolls, linens and curtains used in train coaches.

Aimed at changing ambience of railway stations and decor of carriages, the transporter has joined hands with the National Institute of Design (NID) to redesign coach interior, pantry car, and seating arrangements at platforms and waiting halls.
NID will also design the ladder for upper berths, lighting arrangements at stations and circulating areas to give an aesthetic touch to rail facilities.

Passengers can now have a sound sleep without worrying about missing their station as the railways has launched a new service for a "wake-up call" on their mobile phones half-an-hour before the scheduled arrival at their destination.

A 'train destination alarm call' — has also been introduced through which passengers will get an alert call 30 minutes before the train reaches their destination station.

Mini-shelters at Edappally rly stn before monsoon

Railway authorities are planning to construct five mini-shelters at Edappally station's second platform before the onset of monsoon. The shelters -each five-metre-long -will be constructed by the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) at Edappally as part of its corporate social responsibility programme. The distance between each shelter, costing around Rs 80,000, will be around 20m.
Passengers have been demanding shelters for quite some time. When it rained last week, commuters had to run helter-shelter as there was no shelter on the second platform.
“The sketch of the shelter will be will be handed over to divisional headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram for approval. Work will begin once the divisional railway manager gives his approval. We will inspect the quality of materials that will be used for construction. The work will be monitored by a railway senior section engineer. The shelters will also have chairs fixed on the ground,“ said railway area manager (Ernakulam) Rajesh Chandran.
“However, the extension of platforms and foot overbridge will take more time,“ said sources. Entry from the second entrance to the station will also be delayed as all these works require sanction from higher authorities. Meanwhile, passengers welcomed the development stating that their efforts to improve the facilities at the station are turning fruitful. “ After we held a dharna at Edappally demanding better transport facilities, district authorities started a bus service from Edappally station to Vyttila at 9.05am,“ said R D Manikandan, convener of Edappally railway passengers association. The Edappally Vikasana Samiti had recently organized a public meeting urging the railway , civic body , Greater Cochin Development Authority and non-governmental organizations to come together to develop Edappally as a satellite railway station.
