With the number of people boarding the Alappuzha-Kannur-Alappuzha Executive Express (16307/16308) from Edappally railway station increasing, regular passengers have once again requested the authorities to announce a permanent stop for the train at the station. “Over 80 people benefitted after the authorities decided to allot a temporary stop for the train at Edappally due to the bus strike. There was no prior announcement about the temporary arrangement, still a good number of people made use of the facility. If the stop is made permanent, it will be highly beneficial for dozens of regular passengers and those who come to Edappally for medical treatment, job and shopping,“ said R D Manikandan, convener, Edappally Railway Passengers Association (ERPA).
Manikandan had met S Anantharaman, chief operations manager (COM), Southern Railway , Chennai two weeks ago requesting the same.
The officer had assured to look into the matter, he said.
Over 75 people had boarded the same train last month when a temporary stop was allotted following hartal called by BJP, that too without any publicity or announ cement at the station.
“If 50 passengers board or alight from a particular train, then a stop can be allotted at the station. It will be beneficial for the people who travel from northern parts of the state,“ said a railway officer.
The commercial wing of the railway has already proposed to develop Edappally as the satellite station to the Ernakulam Junction.
“Tripunithura is now a sa tellite station for Ernakulam Junction and many long distance and express trains have stops at the station,“ according to a railway source.
“This is highly beneficial for people who reside, work or regularly commute to the southern part of Ernakulam. If Edappally is also developed on the same lines, traffic and rush at Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town railway sta tions can be reduced drastically,“ the official said.
